Ultrametabolism The Simple Plan for Automatic Weight Loss

May 30, 2009 by Easy Diets · Leave a Comment

Ultrametabolism The Simple Plan for Automatic Weight Loss

Physician Hyman (Ultra-Prevention: The 6 Week Plan That Will Make You Healthy for Life) delivers plenty of scientifically grounded information about weight loss myths, effective individualized strategies centered around the theme of stoking metabolism and a detailed six-week plan—complete with menus and recipes—that “will help you lose 11 to 21 pounds” in those first six weeks. The data and prescription the author provides are far from simple, and results, if attained, are not automatic. But dogged readers will come away from the book with a thorough understanding of dieting principles, such as the timing of meals, portion size, glycemic load, phytonutrient index, the weight loss benefits of relaxation and the optimized functioning of the thyroid. There are straightforward principles buried in the text, such as “eat fruits and vegetables” and “move your body,” plus tips for eating out (e.g., “don’t be afraid to ask for substitutions in a dish,” “request a ‘crudités platter’… instead of the breadbasket” and “order a light drink”); adhering to these tips alone should prove beneficial. The opportunity for readers to remember and apply any of the more involved information is a possible positive side effect. (Apr.)

5 Stars Well-rounded, reasonable, easy to follow advice
I’m shocked that anyone would give this book 2 or 3 stars. I’ve been dieting since the age of 9, and have read more books on the subject of health, weight loss, and fitness than I can count. “Ultrametabolism” offers great advice on how to “reboot” you body if you haven’t been eating so well. There’s no counting calories, protein, or fat grams, and you don’t have to cut out enitre food groups, like carbs. The first two weeks on the plan, you have to refrain from all potentially allergenic foods [peanuts, dairy, wheat, etc.] to give your body a break from anything that may be hard on your body; that you may be allergic to. He also recommends drinking a few cups of his “detox broth”, which you make yourself using a variety of fresh organic veggies of your choosing.

The plan is essentially a whole foods lifestyle. After the first two weeks of detox, you can slowly add things like organic dairy and whole wheat into your diet. There are lots of tasty recipes included, like coconut dal, cashew chicken, and lemon salmon. They’re all pretty simple to prepare for anyone who cooks even a little. Not to sound like some crazy informercial, but during the two week detox part, I lost 14 pounds. The author says you can expect to lose 9 to 11 pounds in the detox phase (mostly water weight, likely). I started the plan right after the holidays though, so I’m sure it was a shock to my body to go from egg nog and pecan pie to fresh fruits and veggies, plus I’m very obese [240 lbs], hence the dramatic weight loss. After that, I lost the typical 1 to 2 pounds a week.

With all the health and diet books I own, this is the one I always recommend when friends and family ask what i suggest to help them eat better without the fad diets. A sample day on Dr. Hyman’s plan would be quinoa with peaches for breakfast, lunch would be black bean and avocado tacos on corn tortillas, salmon with spinach, brown rice, and vinegarette for dinner, and snacks are fresh fruit and raw nuts. As you can see, the focus is on unprocessed foods, without refined sugar and saturated fat. Every time I start to veer away from healthy eating and get distracted by holidays, parties, etc., I always go back to this book to help me refocus and remind me of the basics of good eating.

3 Stars Worth the listen
This audio is packed with good information but the plan is too extreme for most anybody to follow. Yes! you will lose weight if you eat like a caveman … I think most people figured that out on their own. Its hard to take advice from someone who has never been overweight. It does however give detailed information how the body uses different foods and what to avoid in your diet. Worth it if you want to loose weight or just want to eat healthier. I used bit and pieces of this info with my own exercise plan to loose my last 25 lbs. and at age 50 I feel great at my desired weight!

1 Star saw this guy on Martha - sugar doesn’t cause ADHD
saw this guy on Martha - sugar doesn’t cause ADHD

he’s not a good scientist. so many of the claims he makes are overblown to give heft to his arguments. too much extrapolation - takes a simple point or statement about one group and applies to everyone when not appropriate…

finally, he presents NOTHING NEW in this book

5 Stars No Worries
The book arrived much faster then I predicted and in great shape - I have nothing negative to say - it was easy!

4 Stars very empowering
This book has changed my life. It has enlightened me. I am more aware of what I eat, how I eat and the nutrients of the food I eat. I lost about 15 pounds right away. I have since then gained a little back, but am in better shape and have more energy. I would recomend this book be a household staple.

5 Stars Walk Away The Pounds 3 mile walk
I love this DVD. It is perfect as the aerobic portion of your workout plan. Less than an hour to do and you can modify to pick up intensity. I would recommend it to anyone.

5 Stars Walk away the Pound
I am very happy with my purchase. It came as promised and was put to use immediately……

5 Stars Kicked my [........] I guess I need more exercise! :P
I love all the Leslie Sansone walking videos. Keeping to a consistent walking routine is difficult what with weather, dogs not on leashes, rowdy teenagers roaming the streets etc. This is a 3 mile walk you can do in your own living room. On top of that, it incorporates a variety of steps and also weights and upper boddy moves you can’t really do if you’re just out walking in your neighborhood. It is a little over 40 minutes long and it’s very intense, so if you’re out of shape, you’re better off starting with the 1 and 2 mile walking DVDs and just working your way up as your fitness level improves. I’m to the point I can do the 2 mile walk tape comfortably, but this 3 mile tape still kicks my[....]! I have the VHS version of this DVD and I also use wrist/ankle weights I bought at my local dollar store, rather than the balance balls Ms. Sansone uses in the workout — either way is fine. I recommend wrist weights instead of hand weights if only because it is easier to keep yourself from tensing up your hands and fingers. Highly recommended!!

5 Stars Keep going back!!
This is a video I had several years ago. I used it daily, and then we moved and I never saw it again. I tried several others, but nothing worked equally as well for me. This video isn’t complicated, it has only a few simple steps, but challenging enough to work up a sweat and see results. I do not like to do the same workout everyday, so I rotate it with several others, but I try to get this one in a couple of times a week. Well worth the money, and I have bought my share of exercise tapes. Would highly recommend!

5 Stars The best out of the walking tapes
This is the best out of the walking tapes. It is a good workout, you have to push yourself and not just go along with the motions to really get a workout, but it is easy on the joints and easy to follow.

The South Beach Diet The Delicious Doctor Designed Foolproof Plan for Fast and Healthy Weight Loss

The verdict is in: those simple carbs we’ve been living on are killing us. For good health, we’ve got to get our blood sugar under control and stop the incessant cravings. Or so says Dr. Arthur Agatston, author of The South Beach Diet. The first half of the book details the science behind the diet. Most of the explanations revolve around why things you thought were healthy

The South Beach Diet Super Charged Workout

The South Beach Diet Super Charged Workout

Studio: Koch International Release Date: 05/13/2008 Run time: 65 minutes

User Ratings and Reviews

4 Stars Great Workout Video
South Beach Diet Supercharge Workout DVD is GREAT!!!! I first tried this out prior to purchasing it and after doing bout 10 workouts I started seeing a change in my body and it was more lean and starting to firm up. Even everyone around me noticed and made comments. I think its the combination of cardio, muscle strength with the weight and pilates that helps give an over all workout. I have been working out for 10 years and after doing certain workouts I feel a certain way, well afer doing this workout I still feel the affects of it hours later and my resting heart rate is higher so I know I am burning way more calories hours later. Definitely if you want to see results and get in shape, this is one workout you have to buy.

3 Stars alright but….
The workout is alright. I did get a sweat going after 6 minutes of the first 20 minute segment. What I did realize while doing it was you could get the same type of workout by reading a workout magazine’s excerpt. It wasn’t unique.

The good thing was that my kids found it easy to do with me so if you are looking for a workout to do along side a 3 year old and a 1 year old, this one might work for you for the first 20 minute segment.

5 Stars I Love This Workout DVD
I love the workouts on this DVD. The music, instructor, and backround of the book are all great. It’s easy enough for beginners yet effective enough for intermediate and advanced. This is all you need for a total body workout..I just started the program, and will have to give you an update in a couple of months. Dr. Agatston A+ to you.

a

4 Stars Great workout!
I have been on the South Beach Diet for 5 1/2 weeks, I’m down 18lbs and I really needed a better workout than what I was doing. The SBD Supercharged DVD was a great workout, I was exhausted afterwards and that is exactly what I was looking for! The only thing I had a problem with was that there was a lot of jumping in the cardio section and it kind of hurt my knees and I’m only 21! There wasn’t really any streching leading into the cardio, luckily I had just walked a mile before starting it but if I hadn’t I could have possibly hurt my knees even more!

Along with the cardio I did select parts of the Phase 2 workout, mainly focusing on arms and abs and today I feel great! I can actually feel my ab muscles! It is a great workout just make sure to strech beforehand!

5 Stars Answered a lot of questions the first book left open
I love the South Beach diet, but I have never been able to get off of Phase 1. Super Charged definitely addresses taking that next step very clearly. The exercise section in the book is fantastic. It really breaks down the whole idea of “interval training”. What is it? Why is it effective? etc. The exercise section also takes it slow to help you build confidence and a strong foundation in exercise. Great follow up to the first book!

The Body Fat Solution Five Principles for Burning Fat Building Lean Muscles Ending Emotional Eating and Maintaining Your Perfect Weight

“Venuto gets at all the physical, psychological, and even sociological aspects of overeating, outlining a program of mental, cardio, and strength training stressing accountability and self-control. Nothing fluffy about this book: just well-founded scientific research and clearly illustrated direction.”

4 Stars Fitness info
Great health and fitness information. I wish the author would have narrated the entire book, but still very informative.

5 Stars Great Book from a Wise Man, with ONE Weakness…
On page 35 you’ll find Myth #3, of the “8 Biggest Fat Loss Myths.”

Myth #3 Some people are diet-resistant and can’t lose weight.

I’ve got an issue with this… How can it be #3? Really… come on Tom it’s got to be #1. Okay, “slow metabolism” is a good one too.

Okay, they’re all great and you blast all 8 of these self-limiting beliefs out of the water. I so appreciate it. Like so much of this book, as I was reading these I kept thinking that I’d written these myself and I probably have at some point but they are so clearly debunked, it’s hard not to want to take credit for them.

Like everything Tom does, this book is meticulously assembled, with care and detail. It covers the A-Z of fat loss from the inside out. For, like my own work, Tom is not just about the body, he’s trained in the sciences of the mind and it shows. He recognizes that right action alone is not enough and not possible without right thinking.

In the title line I reference a weakness, an issue with the book and that is… (trust that I share this from my own experience, both as a trainer and author with over 20 years in the fitness field) that it’s too much. What I mean is that Tom so carefully and completely covers the issue of fat loss that he leaves the reader with no excuses, no way to fail, no ought except to take the responsibility themselves. That means that even with this amazing guide, some will continue to fail and when they do, they will revolt. They will feel exposed and resentful. Which in itself is no big deal but it will start to seep into reviews and comments. Hence forth let it be known that if something comes up that makes you ever question this work, it’s likely due to this phenom.

I have enjoyed the work greatly and appreciate the impact that I know it will make in this world. It is a book I will keep by my side and continue to reference and support.

[...]I’d much prefer to share the truth, tell it like it is. Plus, I respect Tom and the contribution he has made over the years. I think we are very similar people in our commitment to truth, to what is right, to making a difference and that’s not something you can say about everyone in the fitness and weight loss space. Hence the reason why I value and support Tom’s work.

If you’re fit or seeking to get fit, this is a book you will want to have in your library, now and for life. Don’t think about it, just get it. You can thank me later.

~ Shawn Phillips ~

5 Stars Great informational book
Buy this book if you need to lose weight. It’s filled with great information to make a change for life!

5 Stars MUST READ
Toms books are a must read, if you are a personal trainer or just want to make sense of buildng muscle, reducing body fat and proper nutrition. Tom clearly knows what he is talking about.Very good read for weight loss and understanding what that really means. Loved this book.

Pam

5 Stars Tom Venuto
Tom Venuto’s book sheds much light on the process of losing fat and staying lean. I’m looking forward to reading it and applying it.

Extreme Fat Smash Diet

Extreme Fat Smash Diet

5 Stars I’m Smashing This Fat Forever
The book has changed the way I look at eating food. I lost 6 pounds during cycle 1 and I am determined to keep loosing. Thank you for creating a diet for us real people with food issues. The recommended snacks, guidelines, tips and daily journal give me what I need to succeed. Last week was the first time I tasted a turkey burger. I loved it! I also liked: Become a Total Man Magnet: Make Every Man Fall in Love with You Instantly - Make Him Chase You Down Desperately and Beg for Attention

4 Stars It works…
I started at 134 pounds and dropped to 125 at the end of the 3 week period. (9 pounds lost). That’s a tremendous loss in body fat percentage given my small frame to begin with. The first week is a bit rough, because it’s mostly veggies, fruit, beans, rice and limited chicken. But it’s not impossible. The four frequent meals make it pretty easy to stay on board and not cheat. Although I’m not going to lie– there are times where you can get pretty hungry on this diet! And his suggestion is to eat carrots and egg whites to cure hunger? Not very practical… carrots don’t exactly cure hunger pains!

I’ve been off the diet for about two weeks now and gained one pound back (to 126). I will start the three-week cycle again tomorrow in hopes of losing about five more pounds before bikini season!

Thanks to Dr. Ian Smith for presenting an easy plan to follow. The biggest thing I’ve taken out of this diet is that my body can survive on small, healthy meals. You don’t need to load up on meat at lunch and dinner to feel satisfied. I’m not longer a prisoner of my food cravings. If I can do it, anyone can!

5 Stars Fat Smash diet
I like the common sense approach to Dr. Smith’s book. I’ve only tried it a couple of days with a serious intent on doing it faithfully once I line everything up but the two days that I “trial” tried it, I noticed a difference in the way that I felt. I was dying on day one but remarkably on day two I felt really good and not really sore. Two a days are the key to making this work. Love it

5 Stars Weight loss queen
I purchased Dr.Smith’s books. What is working for me is rotating among the three diets when I grow weary of one. I am having a consistant and positive outcome in my weight loss regime.

5 Stars A great plan if you want to lose weight AND be healthier
I just started the Extreme Fat Smash at the beginning of February and my husband decided to join me. We’ve had the book for over a year, and of all the weight loss plans I’ve tried (and there are many), this one is by far the best. I’ve never eaten so many servings of fruits and vegetables per day. My body feels great. I know I’m not supposed to weigh in yet, but I’ve already lost three pounds and I haven’t even completed the first week yet.

I suggest reading the book a few times to become acquainted with how it works–what’s allowed, what’s not, what you’ll be eating, how much exercise you’ll need each day, etc.

Mentally prepare yourself for the amount of exercise you’ll need to do. But it’s called extreme for a reason. The first day, I did have the withdrawal headache from not having all the sugar I was accustomed to having, but since then I’ve felt great. I’m not craving sweets like I used to, and that’s probably because the food choices here stabilize your blood sugar.

I would recommend this to anyone wanting to lose weight and eat healthier. I took each day’s menu from the book and made an excel spreadsheet out of it. I then posted it on my fridge so I have the entire week’s menu at a glance. There is no calorie counting or writing anything down that way. You just go to your fridge and figure out what you’re having the next day. That’s what my husband and I do and it makes meal planning a breeze. I am proud of how I’m eating on this plan. My fridge is stocked with blueberries, strawberries, carrots, cherries, lettuce, tomatoes, and yogurt. And my freezer is stocked with salmon, mahi mahi, and chicken breast. I feel better about myself when I look in there and see these foods staring back at me. If I weren’t on this plan, there’s no way I’d have all of these healthy options!

Dr. Ian rocks!
